About the Photographs

The photographs were taken with an Olympus Stylus Zoom DLX auto-focus, auto-exposure camera. Its zoom lens has a range of 35-70mm, and it is said to be weatherproof. It also weighs only a few ounces, which makes it a very good backpacking camera. Unfortunately, its automatic-everything capabilities are also limitations, and some of these photographs are better than others. Generally, however, I was pleased by the way the photographs turned out. The really terrible ones are not included here.

Technical Information:

Numbering: The photos are numbered according to film roll and position on the roll; e.g. 101 is the first exposure on the first roll. Some of the less successful pictures are omitted.

Film: I took six rolls of film with me, bought another roll in Hancock, and I probably could have used several more. All of the film I had was ASA 200. The first six rolls were Mystic Prestige (photos 101 - 627, August 2 - 11), the seventh was Kodak Gold (photos 701 - 725, August 11 - 13). When I got to Cumberland, I bought a roll of Fujicolor (photos 801 - 812, August 14).

Scanning and Editing: I scanned the photos with an HP ScanJet 4C scanner, and edited the scanned images with Paint Shop Pro, Version 4.12. Many of the images are cropped, but otherwise unedited. On some of them, I increased or decreased the brightness and contrast.

Putting it All Together: I entered the information for each photo into a database I created in MS Access. I then added the HTML coding in an Access report form, and did some more editing of the resulting HTML files with WordPerfect.
