This bridge, believed to be the smallest lift bridge anywhere, allowed railroad cars to transport coal across the canal to the generating plant. When a canal boat needed to pass, the bridge could be lifted unto allow sufficient clearance. The canal went out of business one year after the bridge was constructed, and there is no evidence that it was ever used as intended. Although rusty, it is still in working order.
